Second round of Afghan peace talks postponed

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Thursday announced postponement of second round of Afghan peace talks following reports of death of Mulla Omar and request of the Afghan Taliban leadership.
A statement from the Foreign Office said that the talks have been postponed following the “resulting uncertainty” in wake of the recent reports of death of the Afghan Taliban leader.
Pakistan expressed the hope that “those forces, which due to their malafide intent wanted to undermine the peace talks, will not succeed in their designs.” The second round of Afghan peace talks was scheduled to be held in Pakistan on July 31.
“Pakistan and other friendly countries of Afghanistan hope that the Taliban leadership will stay engaged in the process of peace talks in order to promote a lasting peace in Afghanistan,” the statement said.
