Two-day anti-polio drive launched for IDPs in Karachi

KARACHI: A two-day polio vaccination campaign was launched in Karachi for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who have been coming from war-ravaged North Waziristan to the metropolis to take refuge.

The anti-polio drive aims to administer the polio vaccine to 80,000 children amid strict security arrangements.

Polio drops were orally given to children in stiff security of police and Rangers personnel in the city’s western neighbourhoods including Islamia Colony, Songal, Mangopir, Mominabad, Haryana Colony, Chishti Nagar, Baloch Goth, Ittehad Town and Islam Nagar.

More than 500 volunteers are rendering their services as part of the polio vaccination teams, said Deputy Commissioner West, Shujaat Hussain.

The objective of the campaign is to administer polio vaccination to the children of IDPs besides those living in sensitive areas of the provincial capital.
