LARKANA: Civil Society Support Program in collaboration with Rights of Expression, Assembly, Association and Thought (REAT) Network organized a Consultative Program on “Rights of Minorities and Landmark Supreme Court Verdict here on Sunday at the local hotel. The program was attended by the leaders of different minority communities of the Larkana district, advocates, media persons and civil society activities. The speakers urged the government to implement last year’s landmark judgment of the Supreme Court that had outlined a strategy on how to protect non-Muslims’ rights.
Speaking at the program, Kartal Lal, the Hindu Panchayat leader of Ratodero said that the non Muslim community in Sindh has strongly been discriminated in government jobs and urged the concerned authorities to ensure efficient implementation of five percent job quota for non Muslim communities in the Sindh. Expressing his concern about blatant violation of the job quota, he said that individuals other than those from minority communities have been hired for jobs in many of the departments and municipalities but unfortunately those hired are often witnessed refusing to deliver as they find the required work below their dignity. He added that the lack of implementation of minorities’ quota has resulted in social, legal and political alienation of the non-Muslim communities who feel being deprived of their due share in employment, welfare and education opportunities.
Lal expressed grief and disappointment upon the noncompliance of the verdict given by Supreme Court of Pakistan in June 2014 to ensure the protection of worship places of religious minorities by forming a special task force. He said that one year has passed but the implementation of that notice is still under question.
Paman Lal, another Hindu leader said that the incidents of abduction and forced conversions of Hindus and Christian girls are increasing day by day but no action is being taken against the culprits. He said that the religious places of minorities are not safe and the government has failed in protecting the worship places of religious minorities in Pakistan. He further said that had the SC Verdict been implemented, many problems and issues of the minorities would have been resolved and added that government departments do not pay heed to the issues faced by minorities.
Social activist Khalid Chandio said that this verdict clearly states, Federal Government should constitute a task force which should devise a strategy to ensure religious tolerance, at the level of schools and colleges, curriculum should be designed or revised in manner that could help promote religious and social harmony, the Federal Government should take such appropriate steps on the basis of which hatred material on social media could be discouraged and those who are responsible for that could be treated under the law. He further apprised the points of SC verdict as, a national council for the rights of minorities should be established with the mandate to ensure that the fundamental and constitutional rights of religious minorities are available to them, a special police force should be constituted to protect the worship places of religious minorities, Job quota for religious minorities should also be implemented and ensured.
Afzal Shaikh of the CSSP said that the objective of the meeting was to create awareness among minority communities on SC verdict and to bring them into mainstream by raising the voice of their legislations. He said that keeping in view the prevalent religious extremism and intolerance against religious minorities, there is dire need to implement the SC verdict in letter and spirit.
The other speakers included Advocate Sattar Hulio, Aneel Kumar, Gianchand, Suhail Maseeh, Lachmandas, Jawed Shah, Imtiaz Gorar and others.
