SIC activists carrying coffin to protest ignites clash with police in red zone

KARACHI: Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) activists on Sunday scuffled with police, while they were proceeding towards the Red Zone in an anti-government protest.
The SIC angry activists carrying body of their slain leader Tariq Mehboob, who was died in police custody two days back. They were carrying the coffin to the Chief Minister House a red zone area on the occasion to lodge their protest. The police contingent stopped them at M.A. Jinnah Road, Saddar, from proceeding further.
The law enforcement agencies have called water cannons to the site to cope with any incident. Both the portions of the road of CM House have been blocked with containers to prevent protesters from converging there.
It is also pertinent to be mentioned here that the Anjuman Naujwanan-i-Islam (ANI) chief and member of SIC Tariq Mehboob died in a custody on Saturday. Officials initially asserted that Mehboob died of a heart attack, but his family suspected that Mehboob was tortured to death.
The SIC Tariq Mehboob along with seven others were nabbed by paramilitary force personnel near Yousuf Plaza in Block 16 of Federal B area and shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation. The ANI chief was accused of providing refuge to target killers which is punishable under the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997.
