Pakistani cotton sold at low price in int’l market against US and Indian brands

RAHIM YAR KHAN: The Chairman Pakistan Cotton Ginners Forum, Ihsan ul Haq Pakistani cotton, despite being of good quality gets low prices in international market.
“Main reason for this is non-branded aspect of Pakistani cotton whereas USA and India get better prices for branded cotton. Pakistan’s cotton industry has failed to introduce its brand during past 60 years,” he added.
Mr. Ihsan ul Haq said that Indian cotton brands, DCH-32, MCH-5, Bunny and Shankar-6 as well as American cotton brands Pima and E.mot are established worldwide and are sold on good prices in the market.
He told that price of Pakistani cotton at best is Rs. 6,800 per ton whereas American cotton “pima” is sold at Rs. 10,300 per ton, however, Indian brand DCH-32 is sold at Rs. 9,500 per ton, MCH-5 at Rs. 8,350 per ton, Bunny at Rs. 8,250 per ton and Shankar-6 at Rs. 7,900 per ton.
He suggested that cotton growers and textile mill owners should jointly introduce brands for Pakistani cotton to get better prices in international market.
On the other hand sources claim that some textile groups are hindering introduction of brands to keep cotton prices low, as they will have to buy branded cotton on higher prices.
