ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly on Monday passed the National University of Medical Sciences Bill, 2015 unanimously as reported by the standing committee.
Minister for Defence Khawaja Muhammad Asif moved the bill in the house for establishing the National University of Medical Sciences.
Speaking on the bill, the Minister said that the existing medical colleges of the armed forces would come under the umbrella of this university.
He said initially the university would be set up in Rawalpindi and later it would be shifted to Islamabad. He said the President would be the Chancellor while Chief of
Army Staff would act as Pro-Chancellor of the University. The Statement of Objects and Reasons of the bill says that Army Medial Corps (AMC) is imparting quality medical education at different tiers across the country.
Considering the potentials and expertise, Med Dte GHQ has decided to consolidate the activities at national level by establishing National University of Medical Science (NUMS).
This project will provide equal opportunity to the civilian youth of the country aspiring for higher education.
Additionally, Medical Colleges under Army including Quetta Institute of Medical Sciences and CMH Lahore Medical College will come under one flag with standard course format.
