KABUL: President Hamid Karzai on Tuesday praised the Independent Election Commission (IEC) secretary’s decision to tender his resignation in the wake of fraud allegations.
Ziaul Haq Amarkhel, accused by Dr. Abdullah Abdullah of trying to commit fraud on the Election Day, announced his resignation at a news conference in Kabul on Monday.
A statement from the Presidential Palace quoted Karzai as saying: “Amarkhel paved the ground for the presidential election process to move forward normally.”
The election process should be completed in due time and in accordance with the commissions’ laws, the president stressed. Millions of people had braved difficulties in participating in the national process, he added.
A week back, presidential runner Dr Abdullah has snapped his relations with the election bodies after he accused Amarkhel of seeking to rig the vote in favour of Ashraf Ghani.
