SUKKUR: Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Dr Khalid Mahmood Somrro has been gunned down in Sukkur early morning.
Sources said unknown gunmen targeted Khalid Somroo in a local seminary after Fajr prayers, when he was on pray hour with other people at Gulshan-e-Iqbal seminary.
According to local Police, armed men entered the area and opened fire at Soomro.
Sukkur Police have since prepared a report which revealed that there were four assailants who arrived in three cars. While three of the men -aged between 25 and 35- entered the madrassa from the back gate, the fourth remained in the vehicle.He was in Sukkur to participate in a conference when the attack took place in the Khosa Goth area.
Soomro was immediately taken to the local hospital of the Sukkur city but reportedly passed away before his arrival. No other persons were attacked or harmed.His body has been shifted to a hospital.
Khalid Soomro was an influential member of the party, especially in the Sukkur and Larkana areas.
Soomro, who also represented his party in the Senate from 2006-2012, was attacked at least six times prior to Saturday’s fatal one.
He leaves behind a widow, six sons and three daughters.
Spokesperson of the JUI-F Sukkur city Molana Bhutsaid that the murder of his party’s secretary general was an act of terrorism adding that the government should order and ensure a thorough investigation into the attack and punish those responsible,
The assassination was also condemned by Leader of the Opposition in NA Syed Khursheed Ahmed Shah as well as Senator Islamuddin Shaikh.
Large number of JUI-F workers are gathering in the area after receiving news of Khalid Somroo killing.
