Dengue is one of the most dreaded diseases currently plaguing India. With a large number of people getting infected with the often fatal disease, it is time we took notice and made changes to protect ourselves. We recently got a question from one of our readers about how she can protect herself from being infected with dengue. Already tending to her mother who was ailing with dengue, Shamala was keen to know how she can protect her mother as well. Here are the 10 tips we gave her:
My mother is a 65-year-old woman, she has been diagnosed with dengue and is being treated at home. I want to know how I can keep her safe from suffering from the disease again and what I can do to not contract the disease myself.
Also known as ‘break bone fever’, dengue is a painful and debilitating disease spread by mosquitoes. Caused due to the bite of an infected female Aedes aegypti mosquito, the disease can sometimes be fatal. Unfortunately there is no clear treatment for the condition nor is there a vaccine against it, so the best way is to prevent the disease from occurring at all. Here are a few simple and practical tips to keep dengue at bay:
Tip # 1: Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are known to bite humans during the day and their most common breeding grounds are man made containers with stagnant water. Therefore, it is advisable to not have any stagnant water around your home. Remember to clean out empty flower pots and not to over water potted plants. If the container that contains water cannot be emptied, remember to cover it well when not in use.
Tip # 2:Since your mother is already ill with dengue, try to not let mosquitoes bite her or others in the house. This will only lead to the
Tip # 3:Turn over empty pails and buckets, so that they do not collect excess water.
Tip # 4:Use mosquito repellents regularly. Apply it well on all exposed areas, during the day as well as at night.
Tip # 5:Make sure your window and door screens do not have any holes. If so, block those areas properly to eliminate mosquitoes.
Tip # 6:Always sleep under a mosquito net.
Tip # 7:If you use a cooler remember to empty out and clean the water tray regularly, even when not in use.
Tip # 8:Always cover your trash can when not in use.
Tip # 9:A natural method to keep mosquitoes at bay is to plant tulsi near your window. The plant has properties that do not allow mosquitoes to breed.
Tip # 10:Using camphor as a repellent also works wonders. Light camphor in a room and close all the doors and windows. Leave it this way for about fifteen to twenty minutes to have a mosquito free environment.
Dengue is a completely preventable condition, all you have to do is take a few steps to keep yourself and your family safe.
