Courts orders removal of signboards from Karachi footpaths till Aug 26

KARACHI: The Supreme Court (SC) Karachi Registry has ordered to remove all the signboards from footpaths till August 26.
A two-member bench comprising of Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Ameer Hani Muslim conducted the hearing on Thursday. The court directed the relevant officers to remove the signboards placed on all the footpaths of Karachi.
The court expressed its concerns and issued show cause notices to representatives of the Korangi Cantonment Board, Malir Cantt, Faisal Cantonment, Defense Housing Authority (DHA) and SITE areas for not appearing on the hearing. The members of the Karachi Cantonment Board, KMC, Coast Guard and Rangers presented themselves before the court.
The Rangers and Coast Guard representatives told the court that they had not permitted anyone to install signboards in their jurisdiction. KMC member argued that no signboard has been placed on the footpath and have been installed only on the green belt.
Justice Ameer Hani Muslim remarked that the signboards placed on green belt are also visible on the footpath, therefore; they all must be detached.
Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali stated that every year thousands of signboards fell down killing dozens of people, hence, they must be removed as soon as possible.
