Citizens seek immediate removal of containers blocking traffic flow

KARACHI: Citizens visiting or having their respective businesses in down town area of Saddar and M.A. Jinnah have asked for immediate removal of containers, placed almost week ago to seal routes, under security related arrangements, for Ashura related processions in the metropolis.
Talking to media on Thursday, they said many of the containers, left stranded on road sides have emerged to be a major hindrance in traffic flow causing inconvenience to the people in general.
“These are also direly effecting our businesses as accessibility to our shops have become difficult while many of the potential customers also can not see our shops,” complained Muhammad Zakir with a corner shop on Preedy Street and Daudpota Road.
Many of the containers lying abandoned in front of Empress Market is also causing frequent traffic jams at the site that is one of the most frequented thoroughfares in the metropolis.
Muhammad Shahid, an office goer talked of difficulties he is facing in reaching his office at Sindh Secretariat and also returning home on Jamshed Road as the artery links different parts of the city to commercial center of Karachi.
An official belonging to Commissioner office, Karachi said the administration was fully conscious of its responsibility in facilitating people.
He said a phase wise approach has been adopted for removal of these huge sized containers.
“Hundreds of containers had to be placed for the protection of precious human lives and with Ashura observed only this Tuesday, we are in fast process to ensure their removal in minimum possible time,” he said.
In reply to a question, he said almost similar arrangements will have to be made for Chehelum procession, in a month’s time, while permission have also been granted for soyem procession but on a limited scale.
