By-polls in Gujranwala: PTI’s Nasir Cheema wins for PP-79

GUJRANWALA: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)-backed candidate Nasir Cheema emerged as winner after unofficial results emerged from Gujranwala’s constituency PP-97 on Sunday.
According to unofficial results from all 33 polling stations, PTI’s Nasir Cheema bagged a total of 10,405 votes, while PML-N’s Warraich could secure 9,966 votes.
In March last year, an election tribunal had declared null and void the election of MPA Ashraf Warraich, a Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate and ordered a re-election in 33 polling stations of the PP-97 constituency in Gujranwala area.
The decision came during a hearing presided by retired district and sessions judge Kazim Ali Malik of an election petition filed by Nasir Cheema, a losing candidate from the constituency belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q).
The tribunal had ordered the recounting in 33 polling stations of Gujranwala.
