20 killed in Islamabad fruit market blast

ISLAMABAD: At least 20 persons were killed and over 100 injured in a huge explosion occurred at I-10 fruit market here near Pir Wadhai, Rawalpindi on Wednesday morning.

The explosives planted in a fruit box went off with remote device at about 8.15 A.M. in the morning, when the market was humming with its usual activities of fruits and vegetables auction. The huge blast that occurred in the crowded market heard far and wide caused severe damage killing several persons on the spot and scores injured.

The bodies and the injured were shifted to the PIMS and other hospitals first by the bewildered people themselves and later by the rescue teams arriving over there. Scores of the injured are said to be in critical condition.

Police said that explosives weighting 5-kilogram was planted in a guava box, which was blast by time device

Islamabad acting IG said that police do petro the market, however, it was not possible to search every truck.

Fruit Market Association said that none of the departments of city administration willing to take the responsibility of managing the market. They said that so long a protective boundary wall was not constructed such tragic incidents would continue to happen.

Following Islamabad local court blast on March 2, fruit market explosion is the second such terror incident this year.
