Punjab govt formed JIT to probe Youhanabad bombings

LAHORE: The Punjab government today constituted a joint investigation team (JIT) to probe yesterday’s Talban’s attack on two churches in Lahore and ensuing events.
The JIT team comprises of police and officials of intelligence agencies. The move came as thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in a second day of protests against the suicide blasts, which killed at least 15 people and left scores of others wounded.
The situation turned violent after two demonstrators were run over by a car. They were rushed to a hospital, but they could not recover. Demonstrators again ransacked public property and pelted police with stones after blocking Ferozpur Road. Police resorted to teargas shells to break up the protest.
In a statement, Irfan Jamil, Bishop of Lahore, appealed for calm. “I strongly condemn violent protests,” he said, urging the Christian community to show patience.
