Pakistani directors steal spotlight in Washington film festival

NEW YORK: A Pakistani film on short story writer Saadat Hasan Manto by Sarmad Khoosat and a documentary Veils and Walls by Huma Beg have won praise form audiences during the Washington D.C. South Asian Film Festival, according to a report received here.

The festival included films from India in Hindi and Bengali languages and Urdu productions by the two Pakistani filmmakers.

Manto screening went sold-out as Americans, and South Asians of Pakistani and Indian descent keenly watched the movies about the life of the highly regarded 20th century short story writer.

Huma Beg’s documentary told the viewers about struggles of four women and important role men play in realization of women’s rights. The documentary won a special achievement award.
