KARACHI: The initial report of Thursday night’s blast targeting SSP Farooq Awan in Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Phase-IV has been prepared.
According to sources, the report states that over 100 kilograms of explosives were used and the bomb was detonated via a remote controlled device. Ball bearings were also used in the bomb.
The bomb was planted in a Suzuki pick-up which was parked by a handicapped person at 9:04 PM. SSP Awan was followed from his office by two suspects on a motorcycle who directed the handicapped person to park the car. The attack was similar to the bombing which claimed the life of SSP CID Chaudhry Aslam.
Two people were killed and seven including SSP Farooq Awan injured when a vehicle packed with explosives was detonated in DHA Phase-IV. The convoy of Farooq Awan, who heads the special investigative unit (SIU) in the police force, was attacked.
“Awan remained safe, though he sustained some injuries,” Karachi police chied Ghullam Qadir Thebo said
Seemin Jamali, the spokesperson at Karachi´s Jinnah Post Graduate Medical Centre, confirmed that two people died in the attack. She added two women were among the injured.
Since 2001, Awan has been a key player in the police fight against terrorist groups in the city. He arrested the kidnappers and murderers of US journalist Daniel Pearl, in 2002 in Karachi. The police officer also arrested Akram Lahori, a hardened extremist, who was involved in several sectarian based killings.
