Five children killed as madrassah floor collapses in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: At least five children were killed when the floor of a madrassah in Peshawar collapsed on Tuesday, sending the children falling into a sewer underneath.

Rescue efforts were underway to clear the rubble as several children remain trapped inside the well-like sewer which had been covered around 15 years ago.

Faisal Kamran, the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Cantt area told media that five children had died while at least eight were injured in the accident.

The children who were sitting on a charpoi fell into the deep sewer when the floor – which was in a dilapidated condition – collapsed, Kamran said.

Several injured students were taken out of the sewer by rescue workers and taken to Lady Reading Hospital.

Several children were still believed to be trapped under the rubble and water inside the sewer.
