Dialogue-led initiative helps postpone long march and opens path for peaceful resolution

ISLAMABAD: A significant breakthrough has emerged in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) after successful dialogue between representatives of the Jammu and Kashmir Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) and Syed Qamar Raza Shah, Chairman of the Overseas Pakistan Foundation (OPF). The talks resulted in the postponement of the planned long march from Rawalakot to Muzaffarabad until July 21, reducing the immediate risk of violent confrontation.
Dr Hamid Al-Mashriqi stated that the appointment of a respected, non-political mediator was essential due to a trust deficit between JAAC and the political leadership in AJK and Pakistan. He credits Syed Qamar Raza Shah, working under the mandate of Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir, with helping de-escalate tensions through dialogue.
The article notes that recent unrest across Rawalakot, Poonch, and Sudhnoti included protests, business closures, communication disruptions, arrests, and loss of life.
